HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Purchasing costs, maintenance costs and management costs are shared within the 6 owners (here defined as “partners”): each of them becomes legally owner of 1/6 of the boat. During the contractual period, with the duration of six years, each partner can leave the system by selling his shares. At the end of the contract, the partners can choose if continuing, sell the boat or buy another one.
- With a pre-established cost, “Smart Boat Owner” takes care of everything: maintenance of the boat, management of the sharing use, management of bureaucracy, berths, insurances, and any problem should present.
- The boats are in use for eleven months a year, as a month (four weeks) are reserved for winter maintenance. The effective weeks of use in a year are 48.
- Each partner can use the boat for eight weeks. The system, managed by website and app, lets all the partners to always keep updated with any detail and it is studied to avoid any contact and discussion within the partners.
- The periods of use are defined in advance. Partners will participate to the week’s selection via App and based on the order of signing of the contract: in each round, a week of preference is chosen. As to keep the system equal, the first year, it will be the first partner to choose first, the second year it will be the second to choose first, and so on. If a partner would like to choose two consecutive weeks, he will skip his shift, and in the following, he can choose two weeks.
- With the online meeting, which is organised at the beginning of each year, the estimated costs during the year are anticipated, and any eventual adding material will be bought with the agreement of the partners.
- We wrote specifical lists of “necessary items” or “improvement items” to establish if any modifications or purchase will need the majority or the totality of the partners to be approved.
- Before and after every change, the boat is cleaned, towels, bed linen and kitchen equipment embarked. The boat has to be delivered by each partner with water and fuel tanks full. With an additional cost it will also be possible to have some extra services, like the galley, SUP and other…

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It is a form of ownership in which more than one person jointly owns the same boat. The partners enter into an agreement regarding the ownership, maintenance, operation, and use of the boat. Partners have a 1/6 share of ownership with a maximum of two shares per partner. All powers and rights regarding the boat belong to the 6 partners.
Smart Boat Owner is aiming to people who never had the opportunity to buy a boat, and to people who have already had one and know well all the problems and costs linked to owning a boat.
As an example, if you buy a share of a boat worth € 360.000, with Smart Boat Owner you only pay € 60.000 for the purchase. You will have expenses of € 5.000 per year for a total of € 30.000 over the 6 years. You will therefore have a total cost over six years of € 90.000.
The difference on any single purchase, equal to € 270.000, will remain in your pocket and no interest or bank costs of any kind will accrue. Furthermore, you won't have to deal with all the maintenance, mooring, insurance etc. and bear the entire annual cost of around € 20/25.000.
Considering that it is a boat for private use and that it will still be in excellent condition, at the end of the program, when the boat is sold, you will be able to collect around € 42.000. The all-inclusive cost will be € 48.000 while the annual cost will be € 8.000. In practice, the equivalent of renting a boat for two weeks in high season but having used it for eight.
All of our boats have Italian Flag, and are only for private use; so, it is totally illegal to use the for commercial purpose. Anyway, it is possible to let family and really close friends to use the boat when the partner is not present. Each partner can choose up to two different people who can use the boat in his place (all the responsibilities are due to the partner). If the partner won’t have communicated in the system within the 15th of January, nobody else, partner excluded, can use the boat.
If your intention is to only rent a boat for a week a year, it is definitely better boat charter.

Yes, the purchase contract, the shared use contract, necessary to regulate the relationships between the members, and the management contract are signed. Any possible disputes and responsibilities are clarified and signed by all partners.
One of the problems that boat owners face is finding space in the marina. With Smart Boat Owner you don't have to face this problem. It is one of the most sought-after, safe and protected tourist ports in the Mediterranean, located in the Tuscan Maremma a few miles from the Island of Elba, in a truly strategic position. Corsica and Sardinia are easily reachable. You will pay only 1/6 of the cost of port expenses, we will take care of all operations in the port.
In the system where each partner shares 1/6 equal shares of the boat, all conditions, rights and obligations are specified in the contract. In short, the contract provides that each partner has the right to use it for 8 weeks for 6 years, according to a transparent and fair calendar that will be established at the beginning of each year by the 6 partners; the boat costs will be divided equally between the partners. At the end of 6 years, the boat will be sold and each member will receive 1/6 of the amount based on the current selling price. A "Shared Use Contract" is also stipulated between Smart Boat Owner and the partners, which regulates the relationships, rights and obligations between Smart Boat Owner and the partner, for six years.
Each partner pays Smart Boat Owner 1/6 of the maintenance costs, marina costs and insurance costs for which they will receive a proposal every beginning of the year and a budget will be established, as well as a commission for services rendered which is determined at the beginning of each year and the details of which are specified in the service contract. All offers and costs can be tracked and viewed at any time through the system.
In order to avoid any interruption of payments, the partners deposit as an advance the amounts that will be determined at the beginning of the year. At the end of each use, each member delivers the boat with full water and diesel tanks.
Each partner may demand different things and may want to add additional equipment to the boat. In principle, they do not talk to each other to compromise on any issue. We ask partners what their requests are at certain times of the year. In the contract there is a list signed by the 6 partners with everything that could be requested, this list is divided into “necessities” or “improvements” (for example, generator, coffee machine, air conditioner are in the improvements list). To implement a request in the list of needs, a majority of votes is sufficient; for improvements, however, unanimity is required. Voting will be secret and takes place via an online survey, containing all the requests, which will be sent to the mobile phones of the partners who will have to vote. Once the results are collected, they are reported to members in the form of a graph. Accepted requests are transferred to the purchasing process.
It is carried out online, via our application, at the beginning of each year, without the physical meeting of members, and in one shift for each week. The selection order of the week in the first year is determined by the order in which the contract is signed: the member who signs first is entitled to the first election. The partners who signed the contract in second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place each choose a week based on the order of signing. This completes eight weeks. Any member can skip a round and has the right to vote in the next round for two weeks. The first selection order passes to the next signatory each year. In this way the choice of weeks of use is perfectly fair.
Yes, any partner can leave the program at any time. The decision to sell shares must first be notified to the other partners. If among the partners there is no one interested in buying the share, those who leave can sell their shares to third parties or receive the support of Smart Boat Owner. The new partner is included in the "Partnership Contract" with an "Additional Protocol".
Week changes can be made between partners via the online application (they cannot communicate with each other directly). Smart Boat Owner contacts the partner receiving the week change request. In case of agreement, the booking calendar will be updated.
At the time of boarding, the member who has to leave checks the fully prepared boat via the check-list (on the app) and signs it. During the check-out, the Smart Boat Owner team checks the boat with the partner, who is issued a signed document certifying that the boat has been checked in all its parts. Smart Boat Owner always delivers the boat in complete and in seaworthy condition. Malfunctions, deficiencies, damages and losses resulting from use are the responsibility of the person who used the boat.
According to the contract stipulated at the time of purchase, the boat is expected to be sold at the end of the sixth year, this is to ensure that members can sell their boat at a high value, without increasing maintenance and repair costs. In this way we aim to offer an optimal advantage to partners who wish to replace their boat with a newer and/or larger model.
Your vessel cannot be used during the annual shore maintenance period. These weeks are determined at the beginning of each year and will not be available for selection during the selection phase; therefore, you can make your choices and plan accordingly.
Our boats are insured against mechanical breakdowns and accidents. If the boat suffers an accident or has mechanical damage and cannot be operated in a way that prevents use by the next partner, insurance is activated to cover the loss of the partner's rights. The insurance pays up to 5 cases per year, up to € 2.500- €5.000, depending on the size of the boat. Furthermore, our boats are insured against damage caused by third parties.
The only fixed expense item is the Smart Boat Owner services commission. Incoming invoices for all costs incurred (drying works, mooring etc.) are divided by six. Since our boats are new, there are no major surprise charges. Since this is a shared boat, internal and external cleaning of the boat is carried out and these costs are charged to the partners' accounts. Furthermore, if the partner sends his galley list before boarding the boat, the products he wants will be loaded before his arrival.
In the reserved section of our website, each partner has an account which they can access with their username and password. Here you can see your weeks in the usage information tab and forward requests for these weeks to Smart Boat Owner. From here you can also request the airport transfer, on-board food and any extras.
CHARTER BOAT
When you buy a boat worth € 360.000 and rent it out, you normally get the right to use it for 1/2 weeks in high season and 2/3 weeks in mid-season.
If you consider that you will not pay for maintenance and port etc., your only expense will be the loss of value which for a charter boat after 6 years is optimistically 40%; the residual value will therefore be € 216.000. It must also be kept in mind that in Italy, for the boat to be chartered, it is mandatory that it is registered in the name of a company, consequently the VAT on the sale must be paid and the net value drops to € 177.000.
The total write-down will be € 183.000.
The annual cost will be € 30.500, and you will have used the boat 3/4 weeks a year.
BOAT WITH SMART BOAT OWNER
If you purchase a share with Smart Boat Owner for the same boat worth € 360.000 you pay € 60.000 for the purchase. You will have expenses of € 5.000 per year for a total of € 30.000 over the 6 years
You will therefore have a total outlay over six years of € 90.000. The difference equal to € 270.000 will remain in your pocket and no interest or bank costs of any kind will accrue.

Each shareholder can freely propose offers for maintenance and repairs. If the offers are accepted by all members through the system, Smart Boat Owner will only be responsible for verifying that the works are carried out in a workmanlike manner.
Or is it obligatory for me to go away?
You will be able to use your boat as you wish during the weeks you choose. If you wish, you can go on an excursion or enjoy boat life in the port.
The insurance that is stipulated includes compensation for the loss of the rights of use of the other members in the event of accidents and malfunctions. In the event that the vessel cannot be used due to malfunction or accident, the expenses of the vessel to be rented or the hotel in which to stay are covered.
Or can I bring my personal belongings?
The boat and all its equipment and amenities are for common use. Kitchen equipment and textile products are provided, and you will find them ready on your boat. Upon your return you will need to remove all personal effects from the boat. We can store your personal items for you in special containers and board them before your arrival.
